5 things that make a bike safe
A safe bike is not luck — it is design. Here are the five things you should look for, whether it’s for your child or for yourself with children on board.
1. Brakes You Can Trust
Brakes are the most important part of the entire bike. For younger children, a coaster brake is simple and intuitive; for older children and adults, disc brakes—especially hydraulic ones—provide powerful, consistent stopping power in all weather, even when fully loaded.
2. Low Center of Gravity and Stability
The lower the load sits, the more stable the bike is. Three wheels and a low cargo area mean the bike won’t tip over when stationary—crucial when children are getting on and off.
3. Proper Size and Easy Mounting
A bike that’s the wrong size is an unsafe bike. A low step-through makes it easy and safe to get on and off—for both children and adults. Check our size guide if you’re unsure.
4. Visibility
Integrated front and rear lights, reflectors, and preferably bright colors make a big difference in the dark and during rush hour. Make sure the lights are fixed—not something you have to remember to charge separately.
5. Certifications and Quality
CE marking and testing according to European standards are the minimum requirements. Also look for named components from well-known brands and a proper warranty—these are signs that the manufacturer stands behind the bike.
